What Makes Osler Different
Exceptional Lawyers need Exceptional Support Services. Become part of something exceptional.
At Osler, Legal Secretarial Assistants are integral members of our client service team. Our enhanced support model allows our Legal Secretarial Assistants to provide a high level and quality of service to our professionals and clients.
This unique model consists of providing both direct secretarial
and administrative support to Legal Professionals and providing additional
centralized specialized resources in a “service centre” on each floor of the
Firm. Depending on the unique needs of each office, the service centre may include a Co-ordinator, several junior and senior Legal Secretarial Assistants with in-depth document production skills and advanced Office 2007 expertise, and a dedicated filing clerk. All service centre members receive additional training to ensure their skills meet the unique needs of their internal clients on the floor.
The Osler difference - Legal Secretarial Assistants can count on:
- Competent, practice-specific, and technically proficient support, even late at night and on weekends;
- Mentorship and support for junior team members by experienced Legal Secretarial Assistants;
- A team approach to completing work, which ensures all deadlines are met. When Legal Secretarial Assistants leave for the day, they can be confident their Legal Professional's work is getting done quickly and accurately;
- More individuals having greater familiarity with unique applications in each practice area; and
- Someone always being available to lend a hand, answer a question or troubleshoot a technical issue.

Corporate Responsibility
At Osler, we engage ourselves fully and often - lawyers, students and staff – in helping our communities become better places to live and work for everyone because we believe that’s an important goal for every leading organization to pursue.
Our lawyers and staff volunteer their time and talents, and make significant personal contributions, to many diverse community-based undertakings and initiatives. Some recent examples include:
- Osler’s 2009 United Way campaign raised over $1,000,000! For three years running, Osler has been the top law firm donor in Canada.
- As part of the Give a Day to World AIDS campaign, over 300 Osler lawyers and staff donated one day’s income to organizations with Canadian roots that have been founded specifically in response to the AIDS pandemic.
- Approximately 25 Toronto Firm members participate as volunteer tutors for children and youth aged 5 to 24 at Central Neighbourhood House, a downtown community centre servicing youth, new Canadians, low-income families, women and seniors. Tutors assist students with homework, assignments, research and areas of academic difficulty.
- In 2009, our New York office participated in the Rock & Run on the River event held at Hudson River Park's Pier 84 in support of the Cancer Survivorship Initiative at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre.
- The Osler Oardeals competed in the 17th Annual Dragon Boat Race Festival at Mooney’s Bay Park in Ottawa the weekend of June 19, 2009. The three-day festival is the largest in North America, with more than 65,000 in attendance and about 1,500 paddlers participating in the event to raise funds for local charities. The Ottawa Osler team was comprised of several partners, associates, staff members and alumni. The Oardeals advanced to Day 2 of the finals and finished 4th overall in their group – their best performance ever! Paddlers from across Canada have raised over $1,500,000 for various charities over the years, including the Special Olympics – Ottawa District, Junior Achievement of Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre.
- In 2009, our Montréal office participated in the Pedal for Kids fundraiser and raised over $15,000. Thirty firm members rode a mighty bike, a custom-made bicycle built for 30, to help raise funds for the purchase of medical equipment and special programs for The Montreal Children’s Hospital.
- Every year the Salvation Army struggles for gifts for “tweens” and “teens”. The Calgary office focused on addressing this need by specifically canvassing for gifts for these age groups in 2009.
- Osler was a proud sponsor of Clara Hughes, one of Canada’s most accomplished Olympic athletes.
