Biography

Louise’s pension practice covers all aspects of the regulation, design, implementation, administration, and termination of pension and other employee benefit plans. She regularly provides advice on plan governance, employee communications, pension investment, funding issues, surplus ownership, mergers, and corporate restructurings and has extensive experience in negotiating agreements with third party service providers. Louise has also served as a pension lawyer at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and as pension counsel to the Ontario Government. Louise began her career as a corporate lawyer at another national full-service law firm with a specialty in the law of non-share capital corporations.  Louise is the Immediate Past Chair of the Ontario Pension and Benefits Section and is the current Chair of the Legal Advisory Committee to Pension Plans Branch at FSCO.  Louise is also a member of the Ontario Regional Council of the Canadian Pension and Benefits Institute. Louise was recently appointed a trustee of a national multi-employer pension plan and serves as pension editor of the Estates, Trusts and Pensions Law Journal.

Notable Matters

  • In 2009 prepared and filed five surplus withdrawal applications with the Financial Services Commission of Ontario
  • Co-ordinated the preparation of documentation relating to three savings plans and a defined contribution pension plan
  • Participated in preparation of a submission to the Financial Services Commission of Ontario on a complex merger application.
  • Participated in successful negotiation of four inter-related surplus withdrawal applications.
  • Assisted in preparation of the court documents in a successful application to the Federal Court of Appeal on a surplus matter.
  • Assisted a major client in reorganization of its governance system.
  • Regularly advises clients on pension investment matters.
  • Co-ordinated a successful application to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on a surplus entitlement matter.
