M&A growth has experienced spectacular growth in 2026, both globally and in Canada. In the second quarter in Canada, the value of announced transactions increased by 40% compared with the first quarter. Osler was tops in the Canadian ranking of announced transactions for the first half of the year, capturing first place by advising on deals totalling US$36.4 billion, representing nearly 28% market share.
“The first half was exceptional, although uncertainty has become the new reality,” says Niko Veilleux, partner, Corporate. In addition to geopolitical and trade tensions, developments within the U.S. administration have complicated some regulatory matters.
“Some agencies were no longer funded by the U.S. government, preventing foreign investment filings for several weeks before things returned to normal,” says Niko.
Niko notes that “everyone is very optimistic about the fall.” He reports ongoing discussions about AI investment and potential acquisition targets. Conversations are equally active in the defence sector, with Niko noting that mining, energy and healthcare innovation are likely to remain frequent topics through the end of the year.
