As part of the “Focus on Leadership” series on the website of Calgary Economic Development, Postmedia Network writer Joel Schlesinger profiles Osler and some of the recent initiatives the firm has launched – many of which feature cutting-edge technologies and innovative client-focused solutions. To learn more about Osler’s approach, Joel connects with Colin Feasby, Managing Partner of the firm’s Calgary office, to discuss alternative fee arrangements, Osler Works – the firm’s innovative way of delivering practical, cost-effective services – and the pioneering role the firm has played in using artificial intelligence.
“We’re a firm that obviously changes with the times – otherwise we wouldn’t be around today,” Colin says. “And we are always striving to stay ahead of changes in the profession, so we don’t just survive – but thrive.”
As an example, Colin points to the firm providing services under a range of alternative fee arrangements, instead of the usual billable hours structure – an option that is particularly appealing to startup companies.
“Startups tend to have predictable needs, so we offer a fixed-fee package,” he explains, “providing them with cost certainty.”
Colin also refers to the firm’s practice of using artificial intelligence (AI) to make the examination of documents for due diligence and discovery more efficient and cost-effective.
“At one time, someone would have laid human eyes on every one of those, whereas, now, many of these documents are electronic and AI can go through it all quickly, producing the ones [that are] relevant,” he continues.
“Technology is not going away; rather, it will continue to be more integral to the profession and, more importantly, make what we do more efficient – and that’s good news for us and our clients.”
