Osler is very pleased to announce that Lawrence Ritchie has been appointed to the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) Board of Directors. Lawrence is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and Chair of the Risk Management and Crisis Response National Practice.
FSRA is a new, independent regulatory agency created to improve consumer and pension plan beneficiary protections in Ontario. When operational, FSRA will regulate many sectors, including property and casualty insurance, life and health insurance, credit unions and caisses populaires, loan and trust companies, mortgage brokers, health service providers (related to auto insurance) and pension plan administrators.
Lawrence, one of the leading securities litigators in Canada, will continue to lead an active practice that spans dispute avoidance and resolution across a range of capital markets, the financial sector and other regulated industries and activities. He also advises clients on class actions, capital markets enforcement, and regulatory investigations and related matters. He served as Vice-Chair of the Ontario Securities Commission from 2007 to 2014, which included serving as a member of the Commission and the Board, as well as a secondment to the Canadian Securities Transition Office as its Executive Vice-President and Senior Policy Advisor.
In 2015, Lawrence was appointed to serve on the three-member expert panel that assessed the mandates, governance and effectiveness of Ontario’s major financial regulators. The panel’s recommendations ultimately led to the establishment of the FSRA.
