The Federal Court has approved a settlement agreement that will distribute nearly $40 million in retroactive disability payments and interest to RCMP veterans.
The settlement is valued at about $70 million in benefits, made up of $30.6 million in retroactive payments, $9.1 million for interest on those payments, and $30.3 million in future benefits.
“This case confirms that courts are not inclined to second-guess settlements and compromises reached by parties and their counsel,” said Laura Fric, a litigation partner with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt. “Class actions often involve judgments about complex legal issues and strategic points that the parties are usually in the best position to assess.”
