We are pleased to announce that Osler’s Intellectual Property Practice Group has been recognized once again in the rankings of leading trademark practitioners around the globe by the World Trademark Review 1000. Four of our lawyers have received special recognition for their legal expertise and exceptional client service in various areas of trademark practice.

In the 2016 rankings, Osler was one of only two Canadian firms with more than one practitioner recognized in the gold band for prosecution and strategy. Additionally, we were recognized in the silver band as one of the top 13 firms in trademarks and ranked among the top four in anti-counterfeiting. Once again, Osler was among the top eight firms filing trademarks in Canada.

“Full-service Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt effortlessly brokers high-rolling IP transactions and manages portfolios for some of the biggest names in the world,” say this year’s editors. Osler’s top-ranked full-service IP team is renowned for its diverse strengths, including excellence in IP litigation; expertise and innovation in patent and trademark prosecution, licensing, portfolio advice and management; and unmatched experience in helping clients to realise the value of IP portfolios in business transactions.

We extend our congratulations to John Cotter, Kelly Moffatt, Lee Webster and Donna White, who have all been recognized as leading practitioners in their areas of practice. Lee Webster and Donna White have ranked again in the gold band for prosecution and strategy. John Cotter earned silver for anti-counterfeiting as well as enforcement and litigation. Kelly Moffatt also earned silver for prosecution and strategy, and was recognized for transactions

The editors say: “‘Definitely up there with the best’, Lee Webster is pre-eminent in the field of licensing and joint ventures.” His practice encompasses the full range of IP services, including counselling, acquisition, clearance and infringement opinions, enforcement, commercial and litigation support and IP portfolio strategies with a strong focus on the structuring of comprehensive technology and IP licensing, joint venture, research and development and other related commercial arrangements.

They write that “the ‘gracious’ Donna White has ‘a wealth of experience’ and excels at strategic work.” Her expertise encompasses trademark prosecution, domestic and international portfolio management, licensing, contentious trademark and domain name issues, trademark enforcement and product labelling. Donna has an active opposition and dispute practice and appears frequently before the Trademarks Opposition Board.

John Cotter has extensive experience in disputes relating to trademarks, copyright, domain names, trade secrets and confidential information, counterfeit products, misleading advertising, software licensing and IT projects. The editors note that “Someone who ‘never lets a file sit’, litigator John Cotter ‘is a firm but polite litigator. He pushes them appropriately and effectively. Plus, he’s easy to get along with’.”

Kelly Moffatt, they say, is “extremely knowledgeable” and “a great asset because she’s practical, responsive and efficient. She really works with companies to accomplish their objectives while clearly identifying risk.” Her practice has a commercial focus in the areas of advertising and marketing, consumer protection and distribution matters.
