Osler tops Canadian M&A rankings

Thomson Reuters has released its Canadian M&A league tables for the first nine months of 2016, and Osler is ranked #1 for completed deals by value. This follows a first place ranking for the year ended 2015.

Highlights of our year-to-date Thomson Reuters rankings include:

  • #1 law firm for Canadian completed deals (by value), with US$39 billion in total transaction value represented by 52 deals

  • #2 Canadian law firm for Canadian announced deals (by value), with US$57.5 billion in total transaction value represented by 61 deals

  • #1 Canadian law firm for Worldwide announced deals (by value), with US$182 billion in total transaction value represented by 79 deals

According to Thomson Reuters, there was US$209.7 billion of deal activity with Canadian involvement announced in the first nine months of the year, up 17% from the same period in 2015, and Osler advised on US$57.5 billion in total transaction value represented by 61 deals. Notable transactions in the first nine months of 2016 included advising Whistler Blackcomb Holdings Inc. in its $1.4 billion acquisition by Vail Resorts, Corus Entertainment in its $2.65 billion purchase of Shaw Media from Shaw Communications, The Independent Committee of the Board of Directors of Husky Energy in the $1.7 billion disposition of an interest in midstream assets and iCON Infrastructure in its $480 million agreement to acquire Capstone Infrastructure.
