Quotas required to have more women on corporate boards? – Toronto Star

In an article for the Toronto Star’s Opinion section, Bob Ramsay comments on findings from 2016 Diversity Disclosure Practices, a report about gender diversity in Canadian boardrooms researched and published by Osler.

Pointing to the lack of progress regarding increasing the proportion of women appointed as directors (the number of women on the boards of TSX-listed companies hasn’t really improved over last year), the commentary piece discusses suggestions for change, including imposing quotas on board composition. The article looks at countries that have mandatory quotas on women serving on boards and how the adoption of legislative mechanisms introducing mandatory quotas is making a difference.

Andrew MacDougall, a partner in Osler’s Corporate Practice Group who co-authored the report, says that efforts related to gender diversity need to change or government involvement may be imminent, “I was expecting better … we do need people to step up and take more action. I do think if nothing further is done by industry, then the government is going to take further steps.”
