The evolutionary long game – Lexpert Magazine

Jun 24, 2016

In an article in the June 2016 issue of Lexpert Magazine, columnist Heather Suttie reviews the current trend of what she calls “hook-ups between traditional Big Law firms and the innovative entities of New Law.” She refers to recent partnerships between large law firms and outside entities, including Osler’s legal technology initiative with Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ), out of Ryerson University. In the article, Osler’s Chief Knowledge Officer, Mara Nickerson, comments on that relationship as well as the firm’s recent Innovation Month that aimed to raise awareness about the transformations underway in the legal industry.

“Our involvement with LIZ is an extension of what we’re doing on the practice side of things,” she explains. In these symbiotic relationships, the law firms provide legal services to the innovative technology companies at reduced rates, while organizations like LIZ help firms like Osler incorporate increased innovation into their operations.
