Osler is pleased to congratulate Jana Steele on her appointment as a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario.
Prior to her appointment, Jana was an industry-leading practitioner at Osler and Chair of the firm’s Pensions and Benefits Group, with experience in all aspects of pensions law, including plan design, administration, governance, restructuring and insolvency, and complex transactional work.
“Jana has been an outstanding colleague and partner at Osler and during her tenure has made a significant impact at the firm and within the pension industry through her thought leadership and advocacy, particularly on innovative plan designs,” says Paul Litner, a partner in Osler's Pensions and Benefits Group. “While we will miss her many contributions to our firm, we are delighted that she has received this exceptional honour and know that she will serve the court with distinction and the same boundless enthusiasm with which she approached the practice of law.”
Throughout her legal career, Jana made a considerable impression in the industry, serving as the Chair of the pensions and benefits executive for the Ontario Bar Association and the Steering Committee for the International Pension & Employee Benefits Lawyers Association. She was also a member of the legal advisory committee to the former pension regulator, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, for many years, and was recently appointed to the FSRA’s new Technical Advisory Committee for Public Sector Pension Plans. She has also been actively involved in legal education as a guest lecturer at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, Osgoode Hall Law School, Western Law, and the University of Calgary, and has written and spoken extensively on a wide array of pension matters.
