Osler is proud to announce that our top-tier Intellectual Property Group has continued its strong showing in the 2021 edition of the World Trademark Review 1000: The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals (WTR 1000), earning Silver band rankings in both the “Firms” and “Firms: anti-counterfeiting” categories for the fourth straight year. Six of Osler’s IP lawyers were also individually recognized across all four categories: “Individuals: anti-counterfeiting;” “Individuals: enforcement and litigation;” “Individuals: prosecution and strategy;” and “Transactions,” with four Osler lawyers receiving Gold rankings.

The following Osler lawyers earned individual rankings:

  • May Cheng – Gold band in “enforcement and litigation” for the third straight year; Silver band in “anti-counterfeiting” for the fourth year running
  • John Cotter – Gold band in “enforcement and litigation” (moved up from a Silver band last year); Silver band in “anti-counterfeiting”
  • Donna White – Gold band in “prosecution and strategy” for the fourth year in a row
  • Kelly Moffatt – Gold band in “prosecution and strategy” for the second straight year; recognized in “Transactions”
  • Lee Webster – Silver band ranking in “prosecution and strategy”; recognized in “Transactions”
  • Barry Fong – Silver band ranking in “prosecution and strategy” for the second year in a row

The WTR 1000 lauded May as “a strategic, thoughtful, respectful lawyer who seeks the best outcomes for her clients with great determination.”

John, according to the WTR 1000, is “at his best when steering companies through complex and hotly contentious matters.” As one client puts it, “John is such a good negotiator that we have never had to litigate to a decision in court – he is very successful in bringing things to a resolution.”

Donna, who is Managing Partner of Osler’s Ottawa office, “is a guru when it comes to opposition proceedings, as well as a judicious all-round counsellor.”

Kelly is described by the WTR 1000 as a “practical and proactive partner” who is “great at cutting to the chase and ensuring that matters such as registry disputes don’t get snagged up.”

Lee, one of the IP Group’s most experienced practitioners, has “exemplary” technical know-how and is “incredibly responsive,” and “always looking to support you in any way he can.

Since becoming a partner in 2019, Barry “has been on a roll” and is a “solutions-oriented lawyer distinguished by thoroughness and flexible decision making.”

Focused solely on trademark practices and practitioners, WTR 1000 has “firmly established itself as the definitive ‘go-to’ resource for those seeking world-class legal trademark expertise.” To determine the rankings, WTR 1000 undertook an exhaustive qualitative research project, taking into account positive peer and client feedback, along with a number of factors, including firms’ depth of expertise, market presence and the level of work on which they are typically instructed.

The WTR 1000 2021 recognition follows a trio of Osler IP lawyers being recognized as Managing IP Rising Stars in Canada for 2020/21 – Faylene Lunn, Lillian Wallace and Sydney Young. The firm’s IP excellence was also recently acknowledged by IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Professionals.

Osler’s Intellectual Property Group is renowned for its diverse strengths, including excellence in IP litigation; expertise and innovation in patent and trademark prosecution; portfolio advice and management; and unmatched experience in helping realize the value of IP portfolios in mergers, reorganizations and other business transactions.
