Roger Smith, Ilana Ludwin and Andrew Boyd of Osler’s National Tax Group accept an award at the 2022 ITR Americas Tax Awards 2022 on September 22, 2022.

Osler is proud to announce that our National Tax Group has been recognized as “Canada Tax Disputes Firm of the Year” at the 2022 International Tax Review (ITR) Americas Tax Awards.

The firm is also pleased to be recognized for our work on Canada v. Loblaw Financial Holdings Inc., which received an “Impact Case of the Year” award. This decision provided rare guidance from Canada’s highest court on how to interpret and apply important elements of the foreign affiliate rules in the Income Tax Act. Osler represented Loblaw Financial throughout the dispute with a team led by Al Meghji and including tax litigators Pooja Mihailovich, Mary Paterson, and Mark Sheeley as well as international tax specialists Drew Morier and Robert Raizenne.

In addition to the firm accolades, Patrick Marley was recognized as the “North American Tax Practice Leader of the Year.” Patrick is Co-Chair of Osler’s National Tax Group (alongside Edward Rowe) and the former President of the Canadian branch (and former chair of the North American region) of the International Fiscal Association. His practice includes all aspects of corporate income tax with an emphasis on international tax planning, domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and corporate finance.

The ITR Americas Tax Awards attract hundreds of submissions and nominations from leading law firms and in-house legal teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. Through an extensive research process, shortlisted firms and individuals were selected for bringing new thinking in providing solutions for their clients and helping them to achieve their objectives. Winners were announced at an awards gala yesterday in New York.

Osler’s Tax Group is consistently recognized as a leading provider for tax law services in Canada. From our offices in Toronto, Montréal, Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver and New York, our tax lawyers operate as an integrated unit and in partnership with our clients to develop sophisticated solutions to our clients’ most complex and important taxation issues.
