Osler has welcomed two new partners to head up the firm’s Digital Assets and Blockchain practice group. Matthew Burgoyne, based in Osler’s Calgary office, and Laure Fouin, in Montréal, join as Co-Chairs of the team, bringing with them extensive experience in many areas of corporate, financial services and securities law.

Having worked with cryptocurrency exchanges, fintechs, digital token and coin developers, crypto investors and investment funds, among others, Matthew and Laure see Osler as a great fit to provide the broader service and support that their growing clients, including startups that have “become billion-dollar clients,” need.

Matthew says the firm sees a “long-term opportunity” in the sector, not as a passing fad. Osler lawyers already practice in the world of crypto and digital assets, but the recent announcement will support the formation of a more formal practice group.

“The establishment of the two co-chairs nationally is a strategic move by Osler to further cement their presence in the industry in Canada,” Matthew says.

“We are only here to structure something that is extremely successful already,” adds Laure.

“I think what we’re doing right now at Osler is building a real pan-Canadian practice, which I don’t think is something common among any other national firms.”

Crypto markets may be in the midst of a downturn, but the pair aren’t concerned about the timing. While some currencies or trading platforms may not survive, Matthew is confident that the sector will rebound due to its constant innovation.

“I think we shouldn’t forget that traditional capital markets have been going through these phases for 200 years,” Laure points out. “And every single one of these phases helped consolidate and mature markets.”
