Take some precautions before investing in cryptocurrencies – Finance et Investissement

In a recent interview, Laure Fouin, Co-Chair of the Digital Assets and Blockchain Group and partner at Osler spoke to Finance et Investissement about the recent turmoil in the crypto market from a Canadian perspective.

“The investment risks differ depending on the type of cryptocurrency and in each case, it is important to consider both intrinsic and extrinsic risks,” says Laure.

In Canada, there are registered cryptocurrency exchange platforms (and platforms that are actively seeking registration) that comply with the applicable regulatory framework and rules, including investor protection requirements that are detailed in the article.

Laure also added that “If regulators continue on the same path, it is not so much an entirely new regulatory framework that can be expected, but rather increasing enforcement of existing rules and regulatory framework through prospectus requirements (and the transparency that comes with it) as well as registration requirements (including financial strength, asset safeguards, insurance and other related obligations).
