The role of the System Support Technician is to assist with supporting the Firm’s core IT infrastructure following the Firms’ IT policies and procedure and standards. System Support Technicians ensure operational tasks are completed in accordance with firm’s operational standards.  As well, this role will assist the Manager, Operations with the managing of day to day operations and assisting with strategic planning of projects and initiatives related to the data centre and operations.


Please note: the successful candidate will be required to work once a month on a rotational basis on Saturdays from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.


Major Responsibilities:


AD user creation/deletion and manage permission

  • Fulfill requests to create new user accounts for network, email, Interaction, CMS and iManage
  • Work with and maintain Active Directory accounts, security groups, group policies, server based shared directories, and user permissions

Server & Storage

  • Provide ongoing support and maintenance of all server hardware, storage hardware and operating systems throughout the equipment’s life cycle
  • Troubleshoot hardware failures on various infrastructure components including desktop, servers, and SAN storage Open tickets with vendors for replacement parts or to troubleshoot software issues
  • Install computer equipment in the data center, including mounting, cabling, powering, and documenting each equipment; Racking new equipment’s and making custom cables for network and storage access
  • Support implementation, troubleshooting, and updating of iSCSI SAN storage infrastructure


  • Manage over 300 Microsoft and Linux Virtual Machines in a development and pre-production environment
  • Build Windows Server 2012 and 2016 virtual machines from templates
  • Manage available virtual and storage resources within the infrastructure environment
  • Migrate VMs across hosts within a HA cluster to perform maintenance tasks on ESXi hosts
  • Create datastore for storing VMs and data
  • Manage VMware Infrastructure/vSphere clusters on Production, Corporate and Test/Development environments
  • Work with System owners and fine tune VM configurations to get the best performance/resource utilization
  • Detection of VMware issues, monitoring and ownership of standards and requirements
  • Participate in capacity planning for the infrastructure


  • Enable network ports using Patch cords to connect the ports in the patch panel to ports in the network switch
  • Maintaining, repairing and upgrading network and computer systems
  • Monitoring and reviewing network utilization to ensure optimal performance, including troubleshooting issues, capacity planning, and recommending modifications

Data center

  • Perform maintenance activities on server hardware

Hardware deployment and decommission

  • Coordinate the receipt of equipment and carry out the physical installation; e.g. rack, stack, deployment
  • Commissioning of servers and ensure that firm standards and best practices are adhered to; includes power, network, OS, AV, security, base applications, and backup/management/monitoring agents
  • Decommissioning of servers and ensure that data is securely wiped

Windows server and workstation patching

  • Reboot windows servers to apply patches during maintenance window
  • Troubleshoot Windows OS and Microsoft application security patch installations
  • Troubleshoot clients with broken SCCM /WMI links and resolve to ensure clients are up to date
  • Create and maintain reports for patch compliance and system audit data
  • Ensuring security patches are applied in a timely fashion, based on risk analysis of severity, to all hardware/software throughout environment
  • Delete inactive objects from AD and SCCM

SCOM monitoring

  • Monitor and report on unplanned changes in the operation of servers and network systems
  • Monitor for any abnormalities with servers, storage, and data centre facilities using a variety of monitoring tools and methods; e.g. e-mail alerts, visual alerts, audible alerts
  • Investigate and report on all alerts; troubleshoot and escalate as required

Desktop & Printers

  • Image client machines utilizing SCCM and USMT
  • Installs hardware and peripheral components such as desktops, laptops, phones, monitors, keyboards, printers, and other equipment as needed
  • Identify and react to issues by communicating, troubleshooting, and escalating as required; escalate to and work with outside vendors as required (e.g. placing a service call for hardware replacement and support)
  • Install and configure new printers and configure network print queues; assist with the evaluation of new network printing products


  • Responsible for New Hire hardware setups

Backup and Recovery

  • Liaise with the System Recovery Specialist to manage changes to the backup/recovery system
Position Requirements

Education and Experience


The position requires a technical degree or diploma with training in server hardware and network administration and two years hands-on experience in a data centre or operations support role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Knowledge and Skills

  • Expertise in deploying, administering and supporting VMware products - ESXi version 5.0 and above
  • Practical experience installing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, and troubleshooting various types of server hardware; e.g. HP ProLiant Blade server, Dell PowerEdge, IBM xSeries
  • Practical experience installing, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting network printers; e.g. Lexmark, Canon and, HP Printers
  • Knowledge of LANs and WANs network protocols (TCP/IP and MPLS)
  • Knowledge of industry cabling standards (CAT5E, CAT6, fibre)
  • Experience with supporting various types of storage (HP EVA, Dell EqualLogic storage systems) with different levels of protection and performance (RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 6, 50)
  • Experience supporting various types of tape technology (SDLT/LTO)
  • Experience with supporting backup applications; e.g. Veritas NetBackup, Windows backup, CommVault backup
  • Experience supporting Windows Active Directory
  • Able to lift desktop, servers, storage and printer hardware (up to 50 lbs.)
  • Strong troubleshooting ability with analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience supporting Citrix, Cisco switches/routers and firewalls would be an asset
