Toronto-based digital health company BlueDot has developed a first-of-its-kind, global early warning technology for infectious diseases. Combining human and artificial intelligence, BlueDot tracks outbreaks from over 150 infectious diseases and syndromes worldwide in 65 languages around the clock and anticipates their potential for global spread and impact. BlueDot technologies empower national and international health agencies, hospitals, and businesses to better anticipate and respond to emerging infectious disease threats, whether originating from natural events, accidents, or deliberate acts. BlueDot was among the first in the world to identify the outbreak in Wuhan in late December 2019, anticipate its pathways of international spread, and deliver timely insights to its partners worldwide to empower effective, efficient and coordinated responses.
BlueDot was founded in 2013 by Dr. Kamran Khan, a practicing infectious disease physician and a Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto. Motivated by his experiences as a frontline healthcare worker during the 2003 Toronto SARS outbreak, Dr. Khan has dedicated his career to preparing for epidemics and pandemics as a clinician, academic, and entrepreneur.
On March 23, 2020, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada has signed a contract with BlueDot to use its software to model and track the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread in Canada.
