Technology – Privacy and Data Management

High profile data breaches, in some cases impacting millions of personal information files globally, have been of great concern to consumers and regulators in recent years. Companies are challenged to gather online data without violating their users’ privacy or exposing their personal information to malicious actions. In Europe, organizations have received stiff fines for privacy infringements. Reputational and litigious risk can also be real for companies facing data breaches, ransomware attacks or cybersecurity risks.

Osler’s Privacy and Data Management Group advises leading technology and online companies on the increasingly complex rules and the broad range of privacy and data governance issues arising from the collection, use, disclosure and management of personal information online. We are acknowledged thought leaders regarding data governance and the emerging area of data ethics and big data analytics.

Our team has extensive experience advising on data security incidents, including many of the largest and highest profile incidents to date. We have defended companies in the context of privacy-related class actions and have represented the technology sector in complaints before the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Osler acts for a broad range of technology sector clients, including the Canadian subsidiaries of the largest companies in the world, and to an expanding array of data companies in the emerging markets. We have a strong understanding of global privacy matters and provide strategic advice to Canadian companies which may be impacted by global privacy laws.

For privacy and data management leadership you can count on, look to Osler for strategic and practical legal advice that can make a difference for your business.
