During the busy year end, it’s hard to stay on top of all the twists and turns of U.S. tax reform. However, with the very real prospect of a final Bill being signed by President Trump before Christmas and the fact that many of the most important provisions become effective in a matter of weeks (January 1, 2018), there is no time to lose for Canadian businesses and investors in analyzing how this sea change will impact them. In order to take stock of this year-end burst of activity and to hit the ground running in 2018, our U.S. Tax Group is hosting a series of seminars across Canada to help Canadian businesses and investors gain insight on exactly what has happened to U.S. tax law under this reform and what it will mean for Canada. This seminar will be uniquely focused on the aspects of U.S. tax reform that will significantly affect Canadians and provide a practical discussion about their real-world impact on cross-border business. Key topics will include the following:
-
the impact of new U.S. corporate tax rates (and pass-through taxation) on the cross-border marketplace and on cross-border planning norms
-
details of new restrictions on interest deductibility and what they mean for relative effective tax rates and capitalization choices
-
anti-hybrid provisions and their impact on cross-border financing options
-
the effects of new base erosion measures on structuring cross-border deals and investments
