Over the past year, Canada has seen remarkable levels of M&A activity, thanks in large part to cash-rich corporate balance sheets, low financing costs and a strong U.S. economy. In an interview in the 2017 edition of Mergers & Acquisitions: Annual Review published by Financier Worldwide, Robert Yalden, Osler partner, Co-Chair of the firm’s National Mergers and Acquisitions Practice and Head of the Corporate Department in the firm’s Montréal office, answers questions about and offers insight into these and other trends that are having an impact on what he calls “vibrant Canadian M&A markets.”

In particular, in the article, Robert discusses the impact of valuation gaps on M&A activity and provides his perspective on available debt and general liquidity levels for M&A financing, including the increasing role of Canadian pension funds in global private equity investing. He also touches on the importance for foreign acquirers to get advice from local legal experts – especially for transactions that trigger merger review by the Competition Bureau – and offers his opinion on the most effective ways of minimizing transactional risk. The interview concludes with Robert’s tips on successfully managing the post-deal integration process.
