2020 Diversity Disclosure Practices - Diversity and leadership at Canadian public companies is now available.

As the corporate governance landscape in Canada continues to evolve and prioritize gender diversity, Osler has released its third annual 2017 Diversity Disclosure Practices Report [PDF] (the Diversity Disclosure Report) to provide an updated snapshot on the representation of women in leadership roles in corporate Canada. Our Diversity Disclosure Report examined gender diversity at the executive and board levels of all TSX-listed companies, other than closed-end and exchange-traded funds, that made disclosure prior to July 31, 2017. The 2017 report revealed that while there is still a long journey ahead, progress is being made.

Our Diversity Disclosure Report summarizes our final results for the full 2016 calendar year — and for the period of January 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017 —  and provides a comparative analysis of results for 2017 year-to-date against results from the same periods in 2015 and 2016 to highlight changes in the representation of women and recent trends. The data presented in this report was obtained by surveying public disclosure documents filed by all TSX-listed companies that are subject to National Instrument 58-101 Disclosure of Corporate Governance Practices (NI 58-101), which requires disclosure respecting the representation of women on boards and in executive officer positions.

Our findings provide insight into the following topics:

  • breakdown and percentages of women on boards for full-year 2016
  • breakdown and percentages of women executives for full-year 2016
  • industry breakdown of women directors for full-year 2016
  • diversity policies and targets for full-year 2016
  • 2017 mid-year results regarding the number and percentage of women directors and women in executive officer positions by industry
  • board policies on diversity and policies related to the nomination and identification of women on boards
  • targets for women on boards and in executive officer positions

In addition to our survey results, our Diversity Disclosure Report highlights notable developments over the past 12 months affecting gender diversity both in Canada and internationally, and provides some examples of best practices for promoting the advancement of women in the workplace.
