Mining Review - July 2013 - Introduction

July 2013

In this edition of the Osler Mining Review we summarize a recent Staff Notice of the Ontario Securities Commission reviewing technical reports by Ontario mining issuers, which found that 40% of the reports had at least one major non-compliance concern.  We also review the recent announcement by the Canadian federal government of its intention to consult about and to establish new mandatory reporting standards for Canadian extractive companies, and review similar initiatives in the European Union and in the United States.  We then discuss two recent FAQs issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission concerning requirements to disclose payments to governments made by resource extraction issuers and concerning reporting obligations relating to the use of conflict minerals. Finally we survey the recent proposal by the Brazilian government for a new regulatory framework for its mining sector.
