Overview and Programs

With 60+ legal professionals, Osler’s Calgary office advises on every aspect of business law for some of the most significant and complex transactions in the world. Providing counsel in both national and international matters, we advise companies of all sizes, with single or multi-jurisdictional footprints. We achieve successful outcomes for our clients though industry knowledge, long-term industry relationships and an appreciation for broad strategic issues.

Located at the hub of Canada’s energy industry, Osler’s Calgary office is best known for our energy law expertise and for representing energy, oil and gas clients who do business in Western Canada. In addition to serving many of Canada’s leading corporations, our Calgary office plays a key role with our North American and international clientele as the gateway to the Canadian energy sector. We were ranked by the Chambers Global in the top tier for Energy: Oil & Gas as “true masters of [our] field.”

Our Calgary office offers the resources of a national firm with the collegiality of a smaller office. Our size makes it possible for students to get to know all of our lawyers and staff. Our legal professionals include students in every aspect of their practices. As one of Canada's most important financial and business centres, Calgary also provides students with the opportunity to work with leading business law experts and organizations, while enjoying a quality of life few North American cities can match.

Summer and Articling Students

We are committed to growing our Calgary office through our summer and articling programs. Our students work with some of Canada’s most respected lawyers across a variety of practice areas. Students are involved in all stages of our client work, for the opportunity to make a real contribution to our team. Summer and articling programs are designed to challenge students in a supportive environment where they can thrive. We strive to provide an open, supportive and professional learning environment where exceptional students can grow into exceptional lawyers.

With a focus on practical training, professional development and student feedback, our summer program is designed for students to pursue their areas of special interest, while gaining broad experience across our key practice areas: business law, energy, commercial litigation, regulatory, insolvency and restructuring, tax and commercial real estate. Summer students gain practical insights into current and emerging business law issues. Partnered with a senior lawyer who acts as a personal mentor, students are also exposed to the ins and outs of a lawyer’s daily practice.

Articling students explore our key practice areas including business law, energy, commercial litigation, regulatory, insolvency and restructuring, tax and commercial real estate, with the flexibility of pursuing an area of particular interest in more depth. Each student is assigned with a lawyer who acts as a personal mentor throughout the articling year and monitors workflow to ensure a varied and manageable workload. Students also participate in a comprehensive professional development program to build critical practice management skills.

Summer and articling students also attend a variety of social and cultural activities to informally network with peers and lawyers across the firm.
