Overview and Programs

Osler's Ottawa office offers the unmatched resources and deep talent of a large national firm, with the high energy and collegiality of a smaller office. Over the course of your summer or articling program, you will have a genuine opportunity to work with all of our lawyers, with the support of our paraprofessional and administrative staff. Beyond the work itself, you will enjoy the cultural facilities of a big city as well as abundant green space and short commutes. Ottawa also has more engineers, scientists and PhDs per capita than any other city in the country.

Situated in the nation's capital which has become one of Canada‘s largest global technology centres, our Ottawa office maximizes the synergies among its Intellectual Property, Business, and Regulatory practices to advance the interests of our clients in knowledge-based industries. The Chair of Osler's national Intellectual Property Department is located in our Ottawa office and our lawyers work closely with their colleagues across the firm’s Canadian and New York offices.

Our lawyers and students highly value our remarkably diverse clientele and work. Osler clients include a cross-section of Canadian and multi-national enterprises in  pharmaceuticals, technology and biotechnology.  We advise both long-standing clients and dynamic new enterprises. With several of our clients based in the U.S. and abroad, our students gain first-hand knowledge of the issues faced by businesses dealing in a global economy. We play a pivotal role in the firm’s seamless delivery of national and cross-border services involving the business, government and investment communities. We also act on an agency basis for some of the world’s most prominent law firms, providing counsel and protecting their clients’ IP interests in Canada. We have experience in a wide variety of IP litigation and prosecution work with active practices in copyright, trademark, and patent matters.

Our legal professionals are recognized leaders in intellectual property, pharmaceutical litigation, corporate finance, M&A, taxation and regulatory law. Osler’s Intellectual Property litigators are nationally recognized with top tier rankings in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and in international rankings In leading IP publications. We have experience in every aspect of corporate law, advising clients from inception and their first financing, through to complex M&A transactions and Canadian and cross-border public offerings. Our lawyers have played a leading role in virtually all of the Ottawa region’s significant corporate transactions over the past twenty years.

Summer and Articling Programs

Our summer program provides students with the opportunity to get to know the firm's lawyers and practice areas. Our students work alongside some of Canada’s most respected lawyers across different areas of practice. Students are involved in all stages of client work to gain practical insight into a wide variety of current and emerging business law issues, as well as exposure to a lawyer's daily practice. Students typically focus on one practice area for the summer term, with some cross-over to other practices.

The expanding IP department of the Ottawa office offers first year summer law student positions to specialize in intellectual property law. We are happy to consider applications from students with science or engineering undergraduate and graduate backgrounds, particularly in the chemical or biochemical areas.

Articling students at Osler have the opportunity to work closely with leading practitioners with diverse specialities and styles. Our articling programs are as relevant and flexible as possible and targeted to the learning goals and career interests of each individual student. Students articling in our Ottawa office receive an individualized rotation schedule. They can choose from two different programs: Intellectual Property or Business/Regulatory Law.
