Dan Kirby, partner, will be discussing whether, in light of recent developments, any change can be expected in the Canadian and Ontario approach to climate change in the foreseeable future.

The Ontario government recently released for comment a discussion paper on possible climate change mitigation approaches that could be adopted in Ontario.  In addition, in the United States, the President’s Inauguration/State of the Union Address prominently noted the importance of dealing with climate change, and the U.S. National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee has recently released a draft discussion paper describing the potentially devastating effects of climate change in the U.S.  The Canadian government has repeatedly stated its intention to mirror any mitigation measures implemented by the U.S. government. Does all of this mean that we should expect change in the Canadian and Ontario approach to climate change in the foreseeable future?
