Directors Roundtable: World Recognition of Distinguished Counsel

Terrence Burgoyne

Nov. 25, 2016

Osler partner Terry Burgoyne served as a distinguished member of the Directors Roundtable panel that honoured Norie Campbell, Group Head and General Counsel of TD Bank Group, with the World Recognition of Distinguished Counsel this fall. The honour recognizes the increasing importance of general counsel in enhancing financial and business strategy, compliance, and the integrity of corporate operations.

Norie covered a wide range of topics as she addressed the audience, including the importance of diversity in the workforce — especially at the executive levels — and explained her role at TD Bank Group, among other things. Terry, a partner in Osler’s Corporate Practice Group, echoed Norie’s sentiments and explained the importance of working with general counsel to ensure areas such as diversity are properly supported.

“As Norie said, law firms are in the professional services business, and nothing motivates law firms more than what clients are interested in and what clients are doing,” Terry told the audience. “That can be done both actively by asking, as some companies like TD do, about what their law firms are doing in the area of diversity.

“But it can also come from law firms observing their clients and how they are behaving, what they are doing. That is very powerful.”

Terry also touched on several other topics, including the importance of how Canadian businesses interact with government regulators.

Terry advises leading Canadian and international companies in executing complex, multi-jurisdictional transactions. He has over 35 years of business law experience, principally in private M&A, joint ventures and strategic alliances, cross-border transactions and professional services businesses.

The Directors Roundtable is a civic group which organizes the preeminent worldwide programming for Directors and their advisors, including general counsel.
