Osler is pleased to congratulate Mary Paterson, Elliot Smith and Joanne Vandale for being recognized as 2019 Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40.
Held on November 7, Lexpert’s Rising Stars Awards celebrate the achievements of Canada’s leading lawyers under the age of 40 at the top of their professions. Winners are selected by a distinguished Advisory Board, which considers the contributions that nominees make to their firm, company or department, as well as to the profession and larger community.
Mary Paterson is a partner in Osler’s Litigation Group and her practice focuses on tax litigation, contract disputes in court or in arbitrations and other general commercial litigation, and assisting stakeholders in receiverships, bankruptcies and proceedings pursuant to the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act. Passionate about access to justice, Mary’s pro bono efforts and achievements have brought meaningful change to the firm and to society.
Elliot Smith is a partner in Osler’s Energy, Construction & Infrastructure Group. Elliot’s background as a professional engineer both differentiates him from other young lawyers in this field and also gives him the advantage of being able to better understand the nuances of complex construction projects. One of Elliot’s biggest accomplishments is the publication of The Canadian Construction Contracts Guidebook. Unlike other construction books, his book provides practical advice on how to successfully negotiate construction contracts.
Joanne Vandale is a partner in Osler’s Taxation Group and she specializes in tax litigation and dispute resolution. Joanne is experienced in tax issues including the GAAR and tax avoidance, resource taxation, scientific research & experimental development (SR & ED) credits, transfer pricing, and employee compensation matters. She plays a leading role in the litigation and resolution of some of the most significant tax disputes in the resource industry and the Western Canadian market. Joanne is passionate about mentorship and is dedicated to teaching students and associates how to efficiently and effectively address tax problems and develop legal arguments.
