Host of This Professional Life podcast, Chris Yeung, describes Matt Burgoyne as someone who is at the growing intersection of technology, finance, and the law in a recent episode. Throughout the podcast, Matt reflects upon the foundation of his expertise in cryptocurrency and blockchain, the difficulties with policies surrounding the industry, Osler’s new SkyHub space, and the future of the digital currency field.
With an interest in technology, Matt began reading articles on the emergence of bitcoin, bitcoin mining and platforms supported by digital currencies. He saw an opportunity in the growing industry and potentially a new area of the law. In a search to build his own practice, he quickly learned to buy, sell and trade digital currency. According to Matt, the work he did to familiarize himself with the field made him a better advisor, which proved to be useful as he began acting for clients in the space in June 2013. The goal became to help people and businesses understand the laws surrounding the subject.
For the future of cryptocurrency and blockchain, Matt predicts that financial institutions will get further involved in cryptocurrency, particularly stablecoins, either by issuing their own or by trading other privately issued products.
