Osler is pleased to welcome Ryan Unruch as a partner in our Emerging and High Growth Companies Group in Toronto. Complementing our national team of experts, Ryan is a highly knowledgeable and talented advisor with a broad range of experience working alongside the leaders of early, growth and late-stage companies, the venture capital funds and investors that finance them, and the strategic acquirors that buy them.

Having advised a wide range of clients including start-ups, strategic investors, venture capital, growth equity and private equity funds, and pension plans, Ryan understands the complex needs and challenges facing these businesses. He has extensive domestic and cross-border transaction experience, along with experience negotiating a wide variety of commercial agreements. Ryan’s industry expertise includes technology, fintech, biotech and life sciences.

Most recently, Ryan practiced at another Canadian national law firm where he specialized in emerging companies and venture capital. Prior to that, he was a corporate associate at the Boston office of a leading global law firm where he focused on private equity transactions. His experience also includes being in-house corporate counsel for one of Canada’s largest national retailers.

With a Band 1 ranking in Chambers Canada, and as the largest and only truly national Emerging and High Growth Companies practice in the country, Osler draws on the collective expertise of more than 30 practitioners across five offices nationwide including Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Ottawa and Calgary. Our team supports entrepreneurs and emerging and growth stage companies from incubation through their growth trajectory, as well as advising the venture capital funds, growth equity and private equity funds that finance them.

Osler acts for more than 1,000 early, growth and late-stage ventures and venture investors across Canada, United States and around the world. In the last five years, we have acted on more than 940 angel, venture and private equity financings. In 2020, despite the effects of COVID-19 on the fundraising landscape, Osler advised on 264 deals with more than $2.3 billion raised by emerging and high growth companies. In 2021 year-to-date alone, Osler has advised on 154 deals with approximately $4.9 billion raised.
