In the first half of 2025, Canadian business saw an increase in deals year over year, with technology, finance and energy sectors leading transactions, according to LSEG data.

Osler’s Head of Corporate in Montréal, partner Niko Veilleux, spoke with Didier Bert of Droit-inc to discuss the Canadian growth trend and Osler’s strong showing in the firm rankings.

“The firm’s team is built to have this stability at a high level. We have recognized expertise in several important sectors, from mergers and acquisitions to corporate finance. In addition, we are very active in Québec, Toronto, and Calgary, and we are experiencing strong growth in Vancouver,” said Niko.

Niko commented that he was surprised that deal activity was so good in the first half of the year given the focus on American tariffs and the uncertainty of the market. That uncertainty seems to have fueled some transaction activity.

“When companies aren’t doing well, they seek financing or to be acquired by a more financially sound partner. We had a lot of that in the first half of the year,” Niko said. “Companies took on a lot of debt during the pandemic, and four or five years later, they realize they may not have the capacity to repay it with their current business plan.”
