Osler is proud to announce that our Intellectual Property Group has once again received Silver band rankings in both the “Firm” and “Firms: anti-counterfeiting” categories in the World Trademark Review 1000: The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals (WTR 1000). Six of Osler’s IP lawyers were also individually recognized across all four categories: “anti-counterfeiting,” “enforcement and litigation,” “prosecution and strategy,” and “transactions,” with three Osler lawyers receiving Gold rankings. The WTR 1000 2020 recognition follows Osler’s recent outstanding rankings in IP STARS 2019, in which Osler received a Tier 1 ranking for “copyright and related rights,” and Chambers Canada, including its recognition in the new Chambers category “Intellectual Property: Litigation" where Osler partner Brad White received a Band 1 ranking.

The following Osler lawyers earned nine individual rankings in WTR 1000 across four categories:

  • Donna White – Gold band in “prosecution and strategy” for the third year running
  • Kelly Moffatt – advanced from Silver in 2019 to the Gold band in 2020 for “prosecution and strategy” and continues her many years of recognition for “transactions”
  • May Cheng – Gold band in “enforcement and litigation” for the second year running and Silver band in “anti-counterfeiting”
  • John Cotter – Silver band in “enforcement and litigation” and “anti-counterfeiting”
  • Barry Fong – moved up from Bronze in 2019 to the Silver band in 2020 for “prosecution and strategy”
  • Lee Webster – recognized for “transactions”

Both Donna and Kelly “come in for tremendous market feedback this year” states WTR 1000. Donna, the Managing Partner of Osler’s Ottawa office, is noted as “[a]n efficient, knowledgeable and practical adviser” and “very service-oriented, always accommodating for last-minute changes.”

Kelly is recognized as “extremely knowledgeable of the IP law, pragmatic in her advice and responsive for all enquiries. Really plugged into the world of business, she is held in very high regard.”

May was described in WTR 1000 to be “[a] name to have on speed dial for both contentious and anti-counterfeiting matters…. Her advice is solid and her follow through exemplary. She thinks through cases strategically, keeping in mind both the client’s business goals and budget constraints where being able to advise from both prosecution and enforcement perspectives is a huge value add.”

John “comes to the fore in IT disputes,” according to WTR 1000, “[w]ith years of experience and a strategic commercial mind in contentious matters.”

Barry Fong and Lee Webster “come highly recommended for any work dealing with trademark prosecution and enforcement. Providing insightful advice in short periods of time, they are great to work with.”

Focused solely on trademark practices and practitioners, WTR 1000 has “firmly established itself as the definitive ‘go-to’ resource for those seeking world-class legal trademark expertise.” To determine the rankings, WTR 1000 undertook an exhaustive qualitative research project, taking into account positive peer and client feedback, along with a number of factors, including firms’ depth of expertise, market presence and the level of work on which they are typically instructed.

Osler’s Intellectual Property Group is renowned for its diverse strengths, including excellence in IP litigation; expertise and innovation in patent and trademark prosecution; portfolio advice and management; and unmatched experience in helping realize the value of IP portfolios in mergers, reorganizations and other business transactions.
