Canada’s import ban on goods produced by forced or child labour has significant implications for the apparel sector, especially for licensees and importers.  The ban, introduced in 2020, has been expanded by Canada’s Modern Slavery Act (formally the Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act) which came into force this year. Concurrently, the Canadian government has committed to heightened enforcement of the import ban.

This webinar will provide an overview from Osler’s international trade lawyers of the legal framework for the ban, the enforcement mechanisms available to Canadian authorities, and the potential risks and mitigation strategies for apparel companies. It will draw on the latest legal developments, including CBSA enforcement actions and draft guidance, and enforcement  under US forced labour laws, to offer practical advice and best practices for compliance and due diligence in the apparel supply chain.

Guest speaker John Foote will provide insights from the US experience, including with the much-discussed Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, and guest speaker Bob Kirke will share industry insights from the Canadian Apparel Federation.
