Most people, including lawyers, report some level of anxiety around speaking-up in meetings. At the same time, most people believe that when the situation is really important (i.e., when talking about work), people on their team will overcome this fear. Unfortunately, the research is clear—most people, most of the time, prefer to stay silent rather than risk saying the wrong thing. This holds true for lawyers and even for doctors performing heart surgery. Until recently, it was common for doctors and nurses to stay silent about potential problems during surgery for fear of speaking-up and being wrong. And if it’s happening during heart surgery, it’s happening on our teams (and especially your virtual or hybrid team).
This session will help participants understand what’s going on and develop strategies for making sure people engage all the time.
