Laura Scheim

Laura Scheim

Laura is a partner in Osler’s Montréal office and a key member of the firm’s Tax Group.

She specializes in complex commercial and tax litigation, with a focus on corporate tax disputes and high-stakes regulatory and administrative matters. She regularly represents clients before provincial and federal courts, including the Federal Court of Appeal and the Québec Court of Appeal, as well as before administrative tribunals and arbitrators.

Drawing on her significant experience, Laura advises Canadian and international corporations and guides them throughout the process of tax reassessments and audits. She provides strategic guidance on navigating tax litigation in the Québec and federal courts, including disputes over the scope of revenue authorities’ audit powers. In her broad-based disputes practice, she has also represented clients in commercial disputes involving large infrastructure and public-private partnership (P3) projects.

Laura brings a unique blend of litigation and financial insight shaped by three years working as legal counsel and in investment management at a publicly traded global legal finance company. She offers rare and highly specialized expertise in Canada in alternative fee structures, contingent risk assessment, ATE insurance strategies, and litigation and judgment enforcement funding solutions, helping clients approach complex disputes with greater financial clarity and strategic flexibility.

A significant part of this prior role involved underwriting investments in high-value litigation, a skillset grounded in the rigorous analytical foundation developed through clerkships with Justice Michael J. Moldaver at the Supreme Court of Canada and Justice Allan R. Hilton at the Québec Court of Appeal. She has also completed CPA Canada’s CICA In-Depth Tax Program.
