Paul is a Partner in the Financial Services Group of our Calgary office. Paul is a banking lawyer with in-depth experience and expertise with respect to secured and unsecured financing, including with respect to term financing, construction financing, real estate financing, CMHC financing, financing of leasehold estates with respect to both airport lands, university lands, and crown lands, cross country portfolio financing, corporate financing, financing of renewable energy projects, syndicated financing, cross-border financing, project financing, vendor take back financing, diversified lending, agriculture financing, mortgage assumptions, mortgage porting, and the purchase and sale of mortgage portfolios. Paul acts for life insurance companies, banks and other financial institutions, credit unions, private lenders, and borrowers.

Paul also practices commercial real estate law, including with respect to purchase and sale transactions (including the purchase and sale of real estate portfolios and hotels), commercial leasing, the development and operation of renewable energy projects (solar and wind), construction and development projects, and all other things commercial real estate.

Paul started his legal career as a litigator, has appeared at all levels of court, and is often called upon to find creative solutions for his clients in relation to work out arrangements, to handle foreclosures, and to enforce loan security and real estate contracts.

Paul is a practical, confident, and trusted legal and strategic advisor in his field.  Paul regularly shares his expertise and presents to clients with respect to various finance and commercial real estate topics.

Prior to joining Osler, Paul was a partner at another National Canadian law firm.

    Prior to joining Osler:

    • Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company, in its indirect share purchase acquisition of the Montana Alberta Tie-Line from Enbridge Inc. for an approximate purchase price of $200 million
    • Acts on a regular basis for Banks and other Financial Institutions, Life Insurance Companies, Credit Unions, and private lenders in relation to complex financings.
    • Acted for numerous vendors and purchasers regarding the disposition and acquisition of significant real estate assets, including office buildings, industrial lands and bare lands.
    • Assisted clients with all aspects of commercial real estate transactions, including: completing due diligence, drafting and negotiating the Purchase and Sale Agreement, preparing and negotiating closing documents, addressing transaction-specific issues, clearing title of non-permitted encumbrances and closing the transaction.
    • Reviewed, prepared, and negotiated lease agreements on behalf of landlords, brokers, and tenants, including lease enforcement, office leases, industrial leases, residential leases, retail leases, solar farm and wind farm options to lease and leases.
    • Acted for developers with regarding the development of residential, multi-residential, mixed-use, condominiums, and commercial projects.
    • Acted for lenders and borrowers regarding various loan transactions and the preparation of related security.
    • Acted for significant financial institutions regarding the disposition and acquisition of large loan portfolios secured by assets across Canada.
