An engine for Innovation
As your business evolves, so do we. Osler Works – Innovation is our platform for developing new and better ways to serve our clients. Through Osler Works – Innovation, we foster the development of new products, service offerings and delivery models that will better support your business and your bottom line.
How do we do this? We draw on the smarts of the skilled talent across our offices, and collaborate with clients, the tech community, educational institutions and industry members to find new ways to effect change. We embrace disruption driven by technology and see it as an opportunity to develop legal solutions that deliver the best results. We also leverage low-cost delivery and streamlined processes that can lower your legal spend. All of these efforts combined with our business and legal expertise allow us to transform our services to offer the most client value.
Osler innovation at work
Below are just some of the examples of Osler innovation at work.

Through Osler Works, we have developed leading-edge transaction, discovery and delivery services to provide legal solutions tailored to save clients time and money. AccessPrivacy, a division of Osler, provides a fully integrated suite of data management products that combines consulting services, information services, thought leadership workshops and Chief Privacy Officer forums. AccessPrivacy’s online knowledge hub offers public and private sector organizations with real-time access to information on current and emerging privacy law issues. For instance, the hub’s Private Sector Source offers a superior search functionality to provide privacy CPOs, lawyers and compliance professionals practical information quickly, helping them to save time and money in managing strategic and day-to-day privacy compliance responsibilities.
Emerging and High Growth Companies Practice
Passionate about entrepreneurship and fostering the growth of early ventures, our Emerging and High Growth Companies Practice is at the forefront of Canada’s vibrant technology sector. Osler acts for more than 700 early, growth and late-stage ventures and venture investors across Canada. In the last three years, we have acted on more than 400 angel and venture financings, and, in 2016, we advised on 132 deals with more than $1 billion raised by emerging companies.
We innovate along with our clients to provide the support they need throughout their growth trajectory. For example, we have developed our service offerings based on a life-cycle model to ensure clients receive economical and practical legal support at every step of their development. We also leverage our sector-expertise and technology to provide our clients low-cost legal solutions, including self-service tools and value bundles. Recent examples include the following:
- Using AI tools, we were able to review more than 100 early-stage purchase and sale agreements and share purchase agreements to define a “best practices” standard base document that stands as an efficiency model that can be used as the start for any drafting process, saving costs and time.
- Using DocuSign in conjunction with Closing Folders, we recently completed a complicated private company individual shareholders sale, with numerous shareholders required to complete documentation to effect an ownership change. Technology helped us to address a significant logistical challenge in managing all the documents and meet the client’s specific deadline, as well as pass on significant cost savings.
Examples of other innovative tools include our self-serve merger notification tool and our guide to Canadian private placements.
How we foster innovation
We know innovation is impossible in isolation – which is why listening, learning and collaboration are key in everything we do. Below are just some of the many ways we work with our clients, vendors, industry members and our own lawyers and staff to advance legal service delivery.
Listening and support
Our innovation efforts revolve around our commitment to support our clients’ success and evolving business needs. That is why we involve our clients in evaluating how things can be done differently. Through our dedicated client listening programs and debriefing processes we develop a deep understanding of what our clients seek now and what they will need in the future to continue to thrive in a fiercely competitive marketplace.
We draw on the knowledge and experience of our internal Change Management experts to help us manage and implement innovation projects across our firm. We have extended our Change Management capabilities as a service offering to support clients as they embrace innovation within their own organizations.
We don’t just license the latest technology, we use it and work with our vendors to drive improvements. Here’s what some of our vendors have to say about our work together.
“Building a business relationship with Osler over the past three years has been exceptionally rewarding. Osler's Transactional Services Team has developed a deep understanding of the full array of Closing Folders' many features. Osler has become more than a customer to us. We see them as a valued partner who is passionate about shaping the direction of our product development so they can deliver even greater efficiency and value to their clients.”
Founder, Closing Folders Inc.
“Since adopting Kira in 2016, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt has embraced the technology to transform its delivery of legal services. We have been thrilled to see them rapidly adopt Kira to an impressive scale. The Osler team has also been great to work with — providing insightful feedback, suggestions and enthusiasm for innovation.”

Learning and professional development
Continual learning and exposure to new ideas greatly enhance innovation efforts. To support ongoing growth and training, we provide a wide range of learning opportunities for both firm and industry members, including our Year-End Professionalism Series, CPD Cinema, client online learning portal and events on new technologies, such as our workshop on the advantages of artificial intelligence.
Collaboration and partnerships
Innovation is a journey that requires collaboration and participation from a wide variety of stakeholders. To get the best results, we recognize our efforts can’t just be internally focused. Here are some of the ways we work with others to develop, implement and refine our innovation initiatives.
Across the firm
From our annual Innovation Month to our office-based legal hackathons, we implement ongoing innovation initiatives across the firm. In collaboration with Ryerson University’s Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ), we hosted our first Big Law hackathon, on February 3, 2016, which brought together Osler lawyers, clients and industry members to tackle critical challenges facing Big Law. Other initiatives include our Associate Innovation Challenge, associate legal hackathons, speaker events, a dedicated innovation space on our intranet and our Get Smart legal innovation and technology expo.
Within our industry and beyond
We often draw on innovative practices and ideas from outside our firm and develop partnerships with innovation-focused organizations, thought leaders and educational institutions, including the Creative Destruction Lab and Ryerson’s LIZ, to enhance our design thinking. We sponsor programs and organizations across the country that are dedicated to supporting innovation and emerging companies, including The Next 36, Zone Startups Calgary, TandemLaunch, AceTech Ontario, CIX and the C100.
