Osler’s Rising Stars are

  • Laure Fouin (Banking & Finance)
  • Amelia Miao (Mergers & Acquisitions and overall Canada)
  • Amanda Heale (Tax Dispute Resolution)
  • Shawn Cymbalisty (Investment Funds)

Amelia Miao’s practice focuses on capital markets, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate matters. Amelia regularly represents both issuers and underwriters on domestic and cross-border public offerings, private placements and listing transactions and has extensive experience advising clients on corporate and securities laws matters. Amelia also advises public company clients in connection with M&A transactions. In addition to her transactional practice, Amelia routinely advises reporting issuers regarding ongoing governance and continuous disclosure matters.

Amanda Heale’s tax advisory practice focuses on tax controversy and litigation, international tax and transfer pricing. Amanda has been involved in some of Canada’s most significant tax disputes, including the first and only transfer pricing case heard by the Supreme Court of Canada (Canada v. GlaxoSmithKline Inc., 2012 SCC 52). At the University of Toronto, Amanda is an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law, teaching International Tax. She also teaches at the annual CBA Tax Law for Lawyers Conference and is a member of the CPA-CBA Joint Committee on Taxation.

Shawn Cymbalisty practices in the area of corporate and securities law, with an emphasis on investment funds, asset management, securities lending and derivatives regulation. He has assisted fund managers, pension funds and other institutional investors with various matters relating to exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, hedge funds, private equity funds and managed account arrangements. He has acted for both issuers and underwriters on a variety of corporate finance matters, and has assisted in the formation and financing of many emerging companies. In addition, Shawn is a qualified and licensed professional engineer with significant experience in the mining sector designing automated systems at all stages of the mining process.

Erin Rubin’s practice concentrates on complex outsourcings and strategic commercial transactions relating to technology products, service arrangements and business processes. She has experience advising large financial institutions, retailers, emerging and high growth companies and other enterprises whose businesses rely on technology and complex services. She regularly drafts and negotiates service agreements and advises on related regulatory and legal issues in areas including data protection, open data, payment systems, licensing, cloud services and OSFI B-10 compliance.
