John Henry Gormley

We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our friend and colleague John Henry Gormley.

John joined the firm’s Calgary office in February 2020 as an associate and was an integral member of the Regulatory, Environmental, Indigenous and Land group. His practice focused on issues that affect natural resource and energy development projects – an area he was passionate about since his student days.

John studied at the University of British Columbia for his undergrad and earned his law degree at the University of Victoria. He was called to the Bar in Alberta in 2017. Before joining Osler, John worked for a Calgary-based boutique law firm on regulatory matters.

In addition to his day-to-day practice in the regulatory space, John was also active in volunteering with pro bono services such as the Civil Claims Duty Counsel Project and Pro Bono Law Alberta. He was also a long-time advocate for mental health patients and appeared before the Mental Health Review Board on behalf of people seeking to be released from involuntary detention under the Mental Health Act.

John will be remembered for his kindness, his acceptance of others, his steadfastness, his professionalism and legal expertise. He will be profoundly missed.

A memorial service will be held October 29th at 2 p.m. at the McInnis & Holloway Funeral Home located at 5388 Memorial Drive N.E. Calgary, AB. The family has asked that donations be made to Skicanada.org.
