Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly prominent role in many industries — and law is no exception. In a recent article in the Financial Post, journalist Rosalind Stefanac explores the ways legal departments and law firms are using AI and discusses both the opportunities it presents for improving efficiencies and the associated potential risks. One of the experts she turns to for insight into this trending area is Sam Ip, partner in Osler’s Technology Group.

“This is one [technology] where we’re seeing a lot of enthusiasm not just from the top down, but from the bottom up … from individuals who see real value in it,” Sam says, referring to the inquiries regarding AI he gets from corporate legal departments “almost on a weekly basis.”

To leverage the “tremendous opportunity” generative AI offers, Sam suggests legal professionals have to master the skillsets that will enable them to use the technology effectively.

“I see a future where a lawyer amped up with great AI skills is just going to be more effective than one without,” he says.
