Osler is pleased to congratulate John Cotter on his appointment as an associate judge of the Federal Court, effective June 1, 2023.
Prior to his appointment, John spent his entire legal career at Osler since articling with the firm in 1986-1987. John represented clients on intellectual property and information technology litigation, and commercial litigation matters. John has appeared as counsel at all levels of the court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He was widely acknowledged as one of Canada’s leading copyright lawyers.

He has made significant contributions to the Firm’s litigation and intellectual property departments representing clients on significant national matters and serving as the most recent past Chair of the National IP department” says Brad White, Chair of Osler’s National Intellectual Property Department. “Not only was John a fantastic lawyer he was also a great partner and colleague. John has written extensively for many copyright and trademark publications. He has presented and taught at the Law Society of Ontario, Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, the Ontario Bar Association and McGill University.
Throughout his career John has been recognized for his work by Chambers Canada and Global, Managing IP, World Trade Mark Review, Lexpert, Best Lawyers, and Legal 500. In 2021, John was named Copyright Practitioner of the Year (Canada) by MIP Americas Awards.
