Osler is proud to announce that the Honourable Marshall Rothstein, Q.C., C.C., has been appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada — the highest honour — for his “eminent service as a jurist, notably on the Supreme Court of Canada, and for his dedication to legal education.” The announcement was made on June 30, 2017, by Governor General of Canada David Johnston in a news release. Marshall was one of only three Companions recognized for their national pre-eminence, or international service or achievement, in a list of 99 new appointments to the Order of Canada.
Marshall’s prodigious body of work has shaped the Canadian business law landscape over the past several decades. One of Canada’s most esteemed jurists, he served as Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 2006 until his retirement in 2015, and he has over 50 years of judicial and legal experience. His legal career began as a civil litigator in private practice and spanned a 23-year tenure on the bench, with the last nine years on Canada’s highest court. Throughout his legal and judicial career, Marshall authored more than 100 judgments and arbitral decisions on domestic and cross-border cases of commercial significance and complexity.
Marshall is highly regarded within Canada’s business community for his expertise in dispute resolution, including M&A, tax, competition, intellectual property and issues in the transportation and energy sectors.
A Winnipeg native, Marshall attended the University of Manitoba (B. Comm., LL.B.) and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1966. For nearly three decades, he solidified his reputation as one of the country’s leading counsel in numerous high-profile cases. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1979.
We extend our sincere congratulations to Marshall on becoming a Companion of the Order of Canada. Marshall, who joined Osler’s partnership in May as a member of our Tax and Litigation Practice Groups, is based in our Vancouver office and provides valuable expertise and counsel firm-wide.
The Order of Canada was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. More than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country.
