On May 24, 2018, TC Energy announced that it had secured approval for the North Montney Mainline Project, a multi-billion dollar, 200+ kilometre pipeline extending TC Energy’s existing natural gas pipeline system into the North Montney area of British Columbia. The National Energy Board recommended that the federal government approve a variance to the previously issued North Montney Mainline Project certificate. This will allow construction to begin on the natural gas project in northeast British Columbia. The project is being advanced by TC Energy’s wholly-owned subsidiary, NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. The federal government approved the variance on June 22, 2018.

The project is expected to begin construction by the third quarter of 2018 and will support thousands of high-quality construction jobs and deliver approximately $100 million in construction contracts for Indigenous businesses and workers. The pipeline will bring approximately 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day from northern British Columbia east into Alberta and downstream markets.

The North Montney Mainline Project represents a significant component of NOVA Gas Transmissions’ $7.2 billion multi-year infrastructure expansion program that will increase transportation capacity for Western Canada producers and provide downstream markets increased access to clean-burning natural gas.

TC Energy is one of North America’s leaders in responsible development and energy infrastructure, with operations in natural gas, oil and liquid, and power.

Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP represented TC Energy with a team consisting of Sander Duncanson and Mark Graham (Regulatory, Environmental, Aboriginal & Land).
