Ian is an associate in the Corporate Group of our Calgary office. Ian’s practice focuses primarily on the power industry, with a particular focus on renewable energy, and the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry, including the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector.
He has experience assisting clients on a broad range of matters and transactions, including asset acquisitions and dispositions, private mergers and acquisitions, project development, major capital construction and supply agreements, long-term commercial transactions, and general corporate and commercial matters. Ian’s related experience includes drafting, negotiating and analyzing corporate and transactional agreements; managing project execution from the pre-Final Investment Decision (FID) stage to the commercial operations date (COD); providing advice on deal strategy; and handling corporate secretarial matters.
Immediately prior to joining Osler, Ian was the lead in-house counsel for the renewable projects of a global independent power producer. Ian also practiced law in the Energy group of a large Canadian national firm out of their Calgary office for over 6 years, where he also completed secondments with two oil and gas supermajors.

- T.D. Williamson in the expansion of its business by joining forces with Petro-Line, a Canadian premier provider of unique, patented pipeline repair and maintenance products and services.
- Keyera Corp. in connection with 15-to-18-year commercial agreements with AltaGas Ltd. involving each other’s midstream, transportation and export facilities, including a tolling arrangement on AltaGas’ global exports platform, fractionation services at Keyera Fort Saskatchewan, and services associated with Keyera’s rail, storage, and logistics infrastructure.
- A midstream energy company in connection with all commercial aspects of its Alberta business, such as long-term midstream services, gas handling, common stream and contract operating agreements, and the development of capital projects including greenfield and expansion opportunities.
Prior to joining Osler:
- Lead in-house counsel with TransAlta Corporation on the two-tranche sale of 100 percent of the expected Production Tax Credits (PTCs) from their Oklahoma wind projects with an expected EBITDA over $780 million. At the time of closing, the sale was the largest publicly announced PTC transfer since the passage of the United States Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
- Lead in-house counsel with TransAlta Corporation with respect to 630MW of wind projects that achieved FID and COD during his tenure representing over $1 billion in capital expenditures, which involved negotiating, drafting and analyzing all major commercial contracts including offtake agreements for power and ancillary products, engineering, procurement & construction agreements, turbine supply and long-term maintenance agreements, interconnection agreements and real property instruments
- Canadian counsel to Heartland Generation Ltd., an affiliate of Energy Capital Partners, on its $835-million acquisition of Canadian Utilities Ltd.’s natural gas and coal electricity generation interests in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario
- Kinder Morgan Canada Limited on its $1.8-billion acquisition by Pembina Pipeline Corporation and its $4.5-billion sale of the Trans Mountain Pipeline system and expansion project to the Government of Canada
