Osler is proud to announce that Hugo-Pierre Gagnon, Emily MacKinnon and Jennifer Thompson have been recognized as Lexpert Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40 for 2021.

The Lexpert Rising Stars awards recognize private practice and in-house lawyers who are emerging leaders in the Canadian legal community. Winners are selected by a distinguished advisory board, which considers the contributions that nominees make to their firm, company or department, as well as to the profession and larger community.

“We are proud to have three exceptional Osler lawyers named as Lexpert Rising Stars,” says Doug Bryce, Osler’s National Managing partner. “Hugo-Pierre, Emily and Jennifer each bring a high level of expertise, client and community engagement and a unique approach to their practice of law, which benefits our collective teams and the clients they serve. They are quickly becoming known in the Canadian legal community as leaders in their areas of M&A, litigation and legal innovation.”

Hugo-Pierre (HP) is a partner in the Business Law Group of our Montréal office. His practice is focused on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, securities, business reorganizations and other strategic transactions. He serves clients from various industries and sizes and has built his reputation as a leading M&A practitioner through his work on a deep pool of marquee mandates. In addition to volunteering at homeless shelters, meals-on-wheels, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montréal and the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie Française, he is actively involved with Montréal Inc., an organization which encourages the success of a new generation of entrepreneurs.

Emily MacKinnon is a litigator in Osler’s Vancouver office. Her practice includes high-level commercial disputes as well as constitutional and public law matters, and she has argued at the Supreme Court of Canada. Emily excels in matters involving complex statutory and contractual schemes, with particular expertise in class actions and constitutional law. Emily also dedicates countless hours providing pro bono legal services and received a research fellowship to research the criminalization of HIV non-disclosure, an area where she has also published her own work. In addition, Emily is a legal officer with the Canadian Forces, where more recently she mentored the Ukrainian armed forces on the role of military legal advisors, the law of armed conflict, and gender equality.
