As part of Osler’s ongoing commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity, Osler is proud to announce that lawyers Sam Ip (partner, Technology) and Leo Wang (Legal Technology) participated in the OBA Career Accelerator Program designed for Indigenous and racialized lawyers as part of the program’s Artificial Intelligence faculty.

The OBA Career Accelerator program, led by OBA’s Innovator in Residence Mante Molepo, is designed to provide 20 Indigenous and racialized lawyers at the early stage of their career (1–6 years) and at the mid-stage of their career (7–15 years) with professional knowledge and skills to advance their participation in three emerging areas of law: artificial intelligence; environmental, social and governance; and fintech. During the eight-week hybrid program from June to early August, participants will develop substantive knowledge about these three areas of law and receive career coaching, mentorship and networking opportunities with leaders and practitioners in these areas.

As part of the OBA Career Accelerator Program, Sam and Leo taught a session on July 10 titled, “The AI-Driven Legal Practice”. In the session, Sam and Leo explored what an AI-driven law practice looks like, both in terms of the application and use of generative AI, as well as the crucial role of lawyers in guiding AI companies through their development life cycle. The session was divided into two related parts: (1) the use of practical strategies to leverage generative AI, including sample prompts, our learnings and an appreciation of pitfalls; and (2) practical guidance when advising AI companies through their lifecycle, from product formulation to evaluation agreements and customer agreements. The participants then engaged with Leo and Sam on a number of thoughtful topics, including common challenges with data acquisition, negotiation considerations and risk management.
