On December 18, 2024, Deep Sky announced it secured a US$40-million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. These funds will be utilized towards research and testing of direct air capture technologies. It is noted that this is Breakthrough Energy Catalyst’s first-ever investment in both a Canadian and Direct Air Capture (DAC) project.

Deep Sky is a carbon capture startup created by Frederic Lalonde and Joost Ouwerkerk, the co-founders of Hopper, and Laurence Tosi, the former CFO of Airbnb.
