Summer Program
Osler’s Montreal office offers the depth and breadth of a top-tier national firm with the intimacy and collegiality of a mid-sized office. We are a full-service law firm with a strong presence in mergers and acquisitions, securities, emerging & high growth companies, venture capital, tax, commercial litigation and class actions, banking and financial services, real estate, labour and employment, privacy and insolvency and restructuring. You will work with some of Canada’s most distinguished practitioners on complex and rewarding work.
All of our future articling students are offered summer and part-time work over the course of their studies. Our summer program provides you with the opportunity to get to know our firm’s lawyers and different practice areas. During the summer, students typically focus on one practice area of their choice with some cross-over to other areas. You will be placed 2-3 per office on the floor of your chosen practice group to promote early integration with the team.
As a student, you are involved in all stages of client work and gain practical insights into a wide variety of current and emerging business law issues, as well as into a lawyer’s daily practice.
Articling Program
Osler Montreal’s unique non-rotational articling program is designed to be as relevant and flexible as possible with a priority on the learning goals and career interests of each individual. You will have the flexibility to decide how you wish to structure your articles as either rotational or not depending on if you wish to continue your professional exploration or focus on one practice group of interest.
With a focus on practical training, professional development, and feedback, the articling program is structured to encourage you to deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in your previous summers and to develop more autonomy as a future lawyer.
Training and Mentorship
All new summer students undergo a 2-week “bootcamp” training where you are shown all the resources and tools at your disposal to ensure you are ready to tackle your legal mandates. Throughout the summer, you are also invited to take part in training sessions and presentations to get better acquainted with the lawyers and their practices. Finally, you are invited to all seminars and practice group meetings available to the legal professionals at the firm. Additional resources such as language courses are available to you, upon request.
You will be paired with a “buddy” during your summer and your articles. The buddy is generally a junior or mid-level associate that serves as a resource and mentor as you navigate the early stages of your career.
The intimate size of the Montreal office also lends itself to countless informal mentorship opportunities that will develop based on your interests and exposure to lawyers while collaborating on files.
