Osler is proud to announce that our Intellectual Property Practice Group has earned the silver band ranking in both the Firms and Firms: anti-counterfeiting categories by the World Trademark Review 1000 (the WTR 1000). Five of our lawyers also received special recognition in four categories for their legal expertise and exceptional client service in various areas of trademark practice.

The WTR 1000 recognizes firms and individuals that “are deemed outstanding” in the IP practice area, based on written submissions and several months of interviews  with hundreds of lawyers and their clients involved with trademarks. We were also commended for our expertise at advising on multijurisdictional matters.

“Adept at handling cross-border issues, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt remains the firm of choice for a multitude of world-renowned brands,” according to the WTR 1000 website. Osler was one of only four firms to be recognized in both the Firms and Firms: anti-counterfeiting categories. Osler’s top-ranked full-service IP team is renowned for its diverse strengths, including excellence in IP litigation; expertise and innovation in patent and trademark prosecution, licensing, portfolio advice and management; and unmatched experience in helping clients to realize the value of IP portfolios in business transactions.

Five of our partners also earned eight individual rankings — up from six in 2016 — as leading experts in their areas of practice:

  • Donna White and Lee Webster — gold band for prosecution and strategy

  • John Cotter and May Cheng — silver band in both anti-counterfeiting and enforcement and litigation

  • Kelly Moffatt — silver band in prosecution and strategy, and recognized in transactions category

Donna, Managing Partner of Osler’s Ottawa office, was commended by the WTR 1000 editors as “focused, conscientious, smart and responsive” for her domestic and international portfolio management. Her expertise encompasses trademark prosecution, domestic and international portfolio management, licensing, contentious trademark and domain name issues, trademark enforcement and product labelling.

Lee was acknowledged by the WTR 1000 as “leading the charge on licensing and transactional work,” and he is a founding member of the Canadian Intellectual Property Council. His practice encompasses the full range of IP services, including counselling, acquisition, clearance and infringement opinions, enforcement, commercial and litigation support and IP portfolio strategies with a strong focus on the structuring of comprehensive technology and IP licensing, joint venture, research and development and other related commercial arrangements.

John’s corporate litigation background gives him “a uniquely broad perspective on trademark disputes and anti-counterfeiting briefs,” according to the WTR 1000. He has extensive experience in disputes relating to trademarks, copyright, domain names, trade secrets and confidential information, counterfeit products, misleading advertising, software licensing and IT projects.

May is “a specialist in the field; she is practical and responsive to clients’ issues — she is a great asset,” according to the WTR 1000. She has more than 20 years of experience in advising clients on all aspects of intellectual property protection and enforcement, including branding strategy, licensing and anti-counterfeiting.

Kelly has the ability to “reference relevant legislation and important case law impacting matters at the drop of the hat,” and her “recommendations always come in the form of practical solutions that can be implemented without much additional revision required,” the WTR 1000 writes. Her commercial practice has an emphasis on consumer protection, marketing, distribution and intellectual property matters.
